Moonlighter is an action RPG game that recently appeared on both Kickstarter and Steam Greenlight. After having reached its goal in just 51 hours, Moonlighter is now rapidly hitting stretch goal after stretch goal.
Moonlighter is a Action RPG with rogue-lite elements about Will, an adventurous shopkeeper, that secretly dreams of becoming a hero.
To earn the daily bread, he needs to venture into the dungeons near his town, defeat strange enemies and obtain loot to be sold at his shop.
Wisely managing the gold from those sales is the only way he’ll get strong enough to risk into deeper gates and, maybe, open the sealed one.
Moonlighter has endless randomly generated dungeons, a myriad of cool and expensive items, many weapons, dozens of weird enemies, five incredibly tough bosses and gold… tones of gold!
You start with 100 gold coins. Some cheap equipment.
And a shop.
Because Moonlighter focuses on the tale of Will, a shopkeeper/aspiring dungeoneer, there is a lot more to this game than the simple hack and slash of most RPGs. Players must strike a balance between the shop and combat. When you pick up an item in a dungeon, do you use it or sell it? Selling items gets you gold to upgrade your shop, upgrade your gear, or purchase adventuring gear.
We want the player to have a lot of fun exploring dungeons, defeating enemies and getting more powerful, but also to worry about questions like: How much money should I ask for this item? Should I keep or sell this artifact? Should I invest my money on more shop space or potions? Which weapon should I upgrade? How do I get enough money for that? — Moonlighter’s Greenlight page
Bargain with customers, fight off shoplifters, and upgrade the shop in order to increase your gold flow and upgrade your equipment so you can keep exploring realms. Near Will’s shop are several recently unearthed portals. Each portal leads to another realm with unique cultures, lore, and treasures. Dungeons are specifically crafted for each zone along with the mobs and bosses inside of it. Each mob drops a piece of loot.
The items that drop from each dungeon vary based on what realm they were found in. Because each customer in your shop has unique purchasing habits, understanding where you need to farm items is important. When Will finds an item, an entry is made into a notebook along with details about where it was found and what the cultural significance of the item is. While some customers will overpay for items, most prefer a fair price. The more Will knows about an item, the easier it will be to set a fair price.
Items found in realms can have a variety of effects when carried, both positive and negative. One item may increase your armor but decrease your health. Deciding which items to cast aside is important. As players continue to upgrade their shop, they can craft more powerful items and even enchant their gear to give it special effects.
Moonlighter boasts more than just an interesting story premise. The retro-inspired graphics are blended with a sleeker, more modern look to produce wonderful visuals. Digital Sun Games has also teamed up with Alec Holowka of Infinite Ammo to help produce the original soundtrack for the game.
We felt that the world of Moonligther deserved a special music, something rich and with emotional. After asking online (and an overwhelming response from the community) we decided to team up with the amazing Alec Holowka.
